Philip Angermaier

Born 1985 German Dömitz, Germany

Philip Angermaier is a contemporary artist living and working in Dömitz, Germany. His practice centres on the visual language and aesthetic of printmaking, through which he creates layered, high-contrast imagery. He works extensively with the lost-form woodcut technique — a process in which a single printing plate is continuously reworked during production. Each pass yields a new block derived from the previous one, which is thereby "lost." Every newly carved, smaller block adds a fresh layer of colour, giving the work increasing depth and complexity with each impression. Angermaier studied Illustration and Design in Hamburg and holds an MFA from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. His works have been exhibited at the Kunsthaus Hamburg and at the 8th International Lithography Symposium in Tidaholm, Sweden, among other venues.

“For me, printmaking is not a mere process of reproduction but a language of its own. Every lost form carries the traces of the one before it — and it is precisely in that loss that the image truly comes into being.”
