Phillip Janta

Phillip Janta was born in Erfurt in 1980. From 2001 to 2008, he studied typography and illustration at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. He lives on an island he calls Janta Island and works there as an illustrator and graphic designer. Janta Island is a secluded island. It is a quiet place full of peace, warmth, adventure, and longing. Phillip Janta is fascinated by the mystery of a deserted tropical islet—both the hidden and the obvious, the seemingly mundane. Documenting this is his life’s work. Phillip produces these images—mostly in black and white, though occasionally in vibrant colors—as screen prints on paper in his studio. If you don’t find him there, you’ll likely find Phillip on the beach fishing, or you’ll search for him in vain as he roams the forests of his island.
