Lizzie Hillier
Between Printmaking and Painting by Lizzie Hillier
October 23, 2026 – November 21, 2026
In WHERE LIGHT SETTLES, Hillier draws on her relationship with land, sea and sky to explore the connection between the natural world and our inner experiences. Shifting light, weather and atmosphere inform her abstract compositions, translating fleeting impressions into layers of colour, texture and gestural marks. Rather than depicting specific places, her works evoke sensations and memories associated with the experience of a landscape.
For this exhibition, Hillier moves away from her previously bold colour palette towards a more restrained exploration of light and atmosphere. Subtle tonal shifts, translucent layers and traces of earlier gestures create a sense of depth and movement, reflecting both the changing moods of the natural world and our own emotional states.
Working between screen printing and painting, Hillier combines the layered process of printmaking with the spontaneity of intuitive mark-making. Colours and forms are built up, reworked, concealed and revealed, allowing each composition to develop through an interplay of intention, intuition and chance.
WHERE LIGHT SETTLES invites us to slow down and look more closely, offering space to reflect on the connections between the landscapes around us and those we carry within.
